Event Details
CONA (the Centennial of Naval Aviation Committee) is planning celebrations in every state during 2011. The Blue Angels will be performing in air shows in over 30 states, and there will be other events such as Fleet Weeks and naval related conventions and exhibitions. Selected quilts will be displayed at as many of these events as possible, potentially being viewed by hundreds of thousands attendees at each event. Additional quilts will travel to naval and other military museums and celebrations, as well as quilt shows and exhibitions across the nation.
This quilt display could potentially be seen by more viewers than any quilt display in history.
Selected donated quilts will be auctioned at the end of 2011 at a special black tie event tentatively being planned for Washington DC. Other donated quilts will be auctioned online or sold at the Naval Aviation Museum Store in Pensacola. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the National Flight Academy, a summer camp and online curriculum available to all 7th-12th graders. This very special immersive five and half day camp will ignite students’ passion to focus on STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) while learning about aviation. Those not able to attend camp can enjoy many of the experiences online or with PlayStations and other gaming devices, and teachers can access the specially designed curriculums, all at no cost.
