Embellished Division
Embellished First Place
“Honoring CDR James Mills”
Mary Anne Griffin of Troy, IL won 1st Place in the Embellished Division.
Quilt Full Description: Quilt base is made with the Baby Lock Embellisher, punching felted wool into a canvas base. Embellishments surround photos and information about CDR Mils which are printed on fabric, as well as silk ribbons, beads, and Swarovski crystals.
Quilt Stories: This piece was created to honor CDR James Mills, the Naval Aviator whose POW/MIA bracelet I wore in my early teen years. His family has been instrumental in providing the photos and information about his life to bring significance to this quilt. I hope this quilt will serve as a reminder that there are still many men missing and unaccounted for from the Viet Nam war.
Embellished Honorable Mention
“My Naval Aviator”
Ann Littleton of Stafford, VA received Honorable Mention in the Embellished Division.
Quilt Full Description: My design includes aviator wings, Flyers Creed, and Navy Hymn, along with character qualities of my naval aviator, surrounded by storm at sea blocks, created using blues from Robert Kaufman, to replicate the sky. My husband's uniform sleeve and glove are part of the label on the back.
Quilt source: Fabric centers in storm at sea blocks and framing for creed and hymn blocks depicts rain. Binding fabric depicts water. Embellishments include beads, pins, and charms. Character qualities appear on the stripes of the appliquéd flags.
Quilt Stories: This quilt challenge gave me an opportunity to express pride in my naval aviator: for his leadership, sacrifice, and service to our country and to our family. He deployed many times and faced many storms at sea and in the air.
