History
This quilt challenge was the idea of Charlie Hoewing, wife of Vice Admiral Gerald Hoewing. Vice Admiral Hoewing USN (Ret) is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida. Charlie, a quilter and museum volunteer, thought it would be wonderful to have a quilt challenge centering around the 100th anniversary of Naval Aviation. Vice Admiral Gerald L. Hoewing (Ret.)
United States Navy President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Naval Aviation Museum and President of the National Flight Academy Pensacola, Florida
VADM Gerald L. Hoewing a native of Keokuk, Iowa was commissioned an ensign from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science degree. He flew the A-7E Corsair II light attack aircraft on multiple deployments to the Western Pacific (WESTPAC) on USS Constellation (CV-64) and USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63), followed by multiple Mediterranean and Indian Ocean deployments on USS Independence (CV-62) and USS Forestall (CV-59)...

Charlotte Story was born and raised in Red Bluff, California. After studying fashion merchandising at Woodbury College in Los Angeles, she relocated to Hanford, California near Naval Air Station Lemoore where she met then Lieutenant Gerry Hoewing. Charlie and Gerry were married in 1978 and moved 19 times in Gerry’s 35 year active duty Navy career. Charlie supported her husband as a Navy spouse through eight six-month long deployments while raising two children. She was thrust into spouse leadership roles as the wife of a F/A-18 squadron Commanding Officer, two ship commands (including an aircraft carrier) and as the spouse of an admiral in charge of a Carrier Strike Group...

Kelly’s education is in the science and art of nursing (RN, BSN, MSN in progress). She has worked mainly as a high-risk labor and delivery nurse, but has always been very interested in textiles and art. She began quilting in 1988, and soon after started her company Jukebox Quilts. Rules and Regulations
Individual quilt makers are asked to create a 40” square quilt with a Naval Aviation theme, which could include airplanes, aircraft carriers, space, honoring an aviator, etc.
No particular fabric is required.
Group submissions (made by two or more people) can be 40” wide x 60” tall.
Embellished quilts (beaded, crazy) can be 40"x40" or 20"x20"
The deadline for online quilt submissions is October 1st, 2010.

The Quilt Tour
Selected quilts will travel in a minimum of four different collections to an estimated 100+ displays. The main traveling collection will be displayed at as many air shows as possible. An additional two collections will be featured at other CONA (Centennial of Naval Aviation) events and naval or military museums. The fourth collection will travel to quilt related shows and displays. Additional displays may be added to accommodate requests from exhibitors. Potentially, this group of quilts will be seen my more viewers than any other quilt display...

Jan. 2011 Kick-off naval events for CONA start in San Diego and Washington DC.
Ongoing 2011 CONA Naval Aviation Centennial celebrations in every state.
End 2011 Selected donated quilts auctioned at a special event. Other donated quilts will be auctioned online or sold at the Naval Aviation Museum Store in Pensacola.
Jan. 2012 Quilts that have not been donated will be returned.
